“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16b-19 NIV
I spent the weekend digging my garden. There was a huge root ball just under the surface of the soil that needed to come out before I could get my new plants in. My muscles ached and burned as the fork hit the soil and loosened the ground. It was hard and sweaty work.
God uses every moment of our lives to teach us something if we let him, so I took a moment to ask him if there was something he wanted to teach me through this exercise. The obvious words that came back were, “Roots go deep!” The root ball in my garden went very deep. The more I dug to get the root out, the further the tendrils went. I had to move planters, paving and garden furniture, and yet still the roots went on. At last when I reached the garden fence and the root continued under it, I had to admit defeat.
At this point God dropped Ephesians 3:16-19 into my heart. God’s love, like that root, goes deep! It’s goes further than the boundaries I set. Further than and the furnishings I use to pretty up the mess I make. Further than the entire landscape of my life.His love is intertwined into the very fabric of the earth and there is nothing I can do to uproot it.
Those words brought me such joy and confidence. No matter the mess I have made of my life, his love goes deeper. It’s not about how much I know or don’t know, his love goes deeper. It’s more than my own self worth or confidence, his love goes deeper. He wants me, and you, to be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Why? Because he loves me. Because he loves you. Because his love goes deeper.
