If all all I have is seed, then planting is giving up today’s bread for the promise of tomorrow’s banquet.
Planting is costly. If all you have is seed, then planting can mean giving up todays bread. But not planting risks tomorrows banquet. Planting in tears is not about being sad that you are planting. Planting in tears is about giving of yourself even when it’s painful to do so and you feel like you have nothing else to offer.
Real generosity comes not when we have loads to share, but when we have seemingly little to offer. This is because a gift that has not cost me anything is not really a gift at all.
In John 6:1-14 we read about the situation when Jesus fed five thousand people with the contents of one boy’s lunch. They boy only had 5 loaves and two fish and he was in a remote area. He was totally within his rights to keep his food for himself. His offering was small and simple. Yet even so, he willingly gave of his simple and Jesus multiplied it. He let Jesus do something remarkable with his seemingly unremarkable offering.
When we give our lives to Jesus, are we giving Him just the premium parts of our lives, or are we willing to give him the simple everyday stuff too?
Planting is not complicated. It is not just for the rich. It is for where we are right now. It is the small and simple acts of everyday generosity and love. We all have something to offer. It can be as simple as a kind word.
What simple thing do you have today that you can give to God for Him to multiply?
“Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.” Psalm 126:5
