That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25-27
It is so easy to worry, isn’t it? Family, work, health, money… There are so many things that can get in the way of a peaceful mind.
When spending time with Jesus recently, I was reminded once again that He has it all in hand and nothing in my life has ever come as a surprise to Him. Matthew 6:25-27 reminds us that He always knows what I need, and when I need it. What I am asked to do is simply to trust Him and His timing.
It’s a bit like baking a cake. But rather than doing it alone, we are called to bake with Him, side by side as a parent with their child. I know that this sounds easier said than done, but that is where trust comes in.
When baking, a child does not worry about whether there are enough ingredients, or how much to add. They don’t worry about the oven temperature or how long to bake the mixture. The parent knows all these things and gets it all ready.
Lovingly and patiently, the parent stands next to the child and gives one instruction at a time.“Let’s add the sugar, shall we? That’s just enough, you can stop now. Well done!”“We need two cups of flour now. The flour is right over there. Can you add it to the mixture for us?”“I think we’re ready for some gentle stirring now. Perfect! ”
A child trusts that what went into the cake mixture will come out as a cake and not a sloppy mess. Even though the ingredients don’t look like a cake, and some of them don’t taste particularly nice uncooked either, they trust that the cake will come out sweet and tasty. They also trust that their parent will know the correct temperature and timing needed to bake the cake to perfection (Let’s be honest, that is generally longer than we would like it to take too). All this reminds me of our lives with Jesus. We are called to work with Him in this life; trusting in His timing and purposes. We need to remember that He has everything in hand, even when it looks bleak, and we don’t understand what is happening… Remember those uncooked ingredients?
All He asks us to do is trust Him by:
- Listening to His instructions
- Acting on them and
- Waiting patiently and expectantly
Last thing, cake always tastes better when shared. Who can you share your “baking” story with today?
